Welland Fighters Continue to be Superior to the Competition
Saturday June 12th, Erie Pennsylvania Extreme Fight Club "Downtown Beatdown 3," Welland's Eric "Atomic" Attard (170 pounds, welterweight) remained undefeated in Mixed Martial Arts competition by defeating two-time NCAA Division 1 All-American Wrestling Champion Carl "The Closer" Amerine by TKO in the second round with an amazing display of heart and versatility.
After a back and forth first round and surviving an excellent rear-naked choke by Amerine at the end of round 1, Attard came out in the second and controlled the striking and grappling game eventually finishing Amerine by strikes in top mount. Amerine boasted a 2-0 professional record and 5-0 amateur record coming into this fight. All of his fights were first round victories. Attard on the other hand was 1-0 professionally and 4-0 in his amateur career.
"This was a huge victory for Eric," said Coach Chris Bonfoco, "wrestlers are notoriously difficult to fight but Eric was the superior mixed martial artist and in the end that is what is most important," continued Bonfoco. Attard is set for a title fight on his next card when he returns to the cage later this year.
Three other fighters represented Welland's Modern Vision MMA on the card. For all three it was their debut: Welland's Middleweight (185 pounds) Brandon "Bubbles" Bouchard (1-0) defeated Christopher Torres (0-1) by unanimous decision, Fonthill's welterweight (170 pounds) Xavier "Ice" Nash (1-0) defeated Nicholas Heise (1-1) by split decision and Smithville's lightweight (155 pounds) Fred Van Elburg (0-1) lost by anaconda choke to Eric McKnight (1-0).

Lima Ohio Proves to Be Second Home for Welland MMA Fighter Matt DiMarcantonio
June 19, 2010 Lima Ohio, Phantom Fight Explosion 9, "The Cat" Matt DiMarcantonio (5-1) defended his 155 pound title by defeating Delphos Ohio's Craig Wreede (3-2) by TKO early in the second round.
After devastating his opponent with strikes and a superior ground game in the first round, DiMarcantonio made short work of Wreede in round 2 knocking him to the canvas with straight punches and finishing him on the canvas from the mount. "Matt was amazing in this fight. Wreede had no answer for DiMarcantio's speed, explosiveness and technique," said Coach Chris Bonfoco.
Almost exactly 1 year since his Mixed Martial Arts Debut in Lima Ohio DiMarcantonio finished his first 12 months in impressive fashion. This was the fourth time DiMarcantonio has fought for Phantom Fight Explosion and he has made several fans in hostile territory. "Since MMA isn't legal here in Ontario I've gotten used to getting booed. This time I got mostly cheers. It was a nice change," said DiMarcantonio.
DiMarcantonio wasn't the only fighter representing Welland and Modern Vision MMA. "The Bully" Matt DiCenso (1-0) debuted on the card in the 205 pound division (Light Heavyweight) in equally impressive fashion by defeating Kit Scott (0-1) by TKO early in the third round.
After proving Mixed Martial Arts superiority throughout the first two rounds it was just a matter of time when DiCenso was going to finish Scott. 30 seconds into the third round DiCenso landed a straight-right followed by a left-hook dropping Scott to the canvas causing referee Jerry Po to stop the fight.
"These two fighters were incredble and it was really nice that we finally have some fans down there. It's nice not to get booed," said Coach Bonfoco, "I hope MMA is legalized in Ontario soon so we don't have to drive so far to demonstrate our skills," he continued.
